VEGETARIAN SISIG

VEGETARIAN SISIG- - here is my meatless version of this popular Kapampangan meat dish, usually seasoned with calamansi or lemon juice, chopped onions and chopped chili peppers. Different adaptations such as tofu or tokwa, mushroom or other veggie cold cuts are common.  My sisig is a combination of gluten or veggie meat and tofu or tokwa.  It is an easy way to enjoy the bold flavors of meatless sisig, that is to say, creamy, spicy and tasty!

Sisig first became popular as an appetizer later turned main dish.  Sisig means 'to snack on something sour'.  So the secret to a delicious sisig is its perky sourness blended with a creamy dressing.

I know Filipinos just love to eat sisig so much. It is definitely one of the top favorites in the country, However, it is good to try vegetarian sisig once in a while.  It is a good alternative to meat versions.  It is clean, healthy and guilt-free but tastes just as good as the original.  And when you start liking it, it would be a good healthy eating habit to keep.

You can enjoy sisig as a main dish with steaming hot rice, or just make 'papak' by itself with some crackers or chippy and your favorite drink.

I have been cooking vegetarian sisig as a main meal with rice quite often for my family for many years.  We are all vegetarians in the family and it is our complete protein source. We never get tired of the flavor.

Ingredients:
1/2 k gluten or vegemeat (fried, grilled, chopped finely))
1 block tofu (250g) or 4 pcs tokwa (mashed, fried)
1 pack all-purpose cream (250ml)
2 Tbsp ginger (chopped finely)
2 Tbsp leeks or spring onions
(or 1 tsp garlic and 2 Tbsp onions)
1/2 c cheese (grated)
2-4 Tbsp calamansi (or lemon) juice
2 Tbsp red bell pepper (chopped finely)
2 Tbsp Sisig powder
salt

Garnish:
red bell pepper (chopped finely)
spring onions (chopped finely)

1. In a pan, saute leeks or spring onions or garlic and onion. Add all-purpose cream, cheese, red bell pepper, salt, ginger and sisig powder.  Mix and simmer.
2. Add all other ingredients.  Mix well, garnish and serve.
