WORLD OCEANS DAY (June 8) -- is a global celebration and reminder of the importance of the ocean in our lives, its beauty, its wealth...
I have very fond childhood memories of the ocean. I grew up swimming in the waters of Anilao, Mabini, Batangas, so the ocean is very close to my heart. I'm always inclined to go back to the ocean of Anilao and in my small way help restore whatever mankind have destroyed.
Even though we live on land, we need the ocean to live. The ocean is the lungs of our planet. It is the source of 80 per cent of the air we breathe. It is up to us, human beings, to help protect the marine life who live in it and allow them to continue to live also. Yes, we can do something, even in our small way. Every piece of plastic or foil that we refuse to consume will help save the lives of 100,000 marine life who die of plastic entanglement every year.
In the ancient scripture Bhagavad-Gita, (Chapter 10, verse 24), Krishna, the Supreme Lord God Himself says to Arjuna, "....and of bodies of water, I am the ocean".
In this world, all wonderful phenomena that we see showing power, beauty or grandeur -- like the ocean -- are but a partial manifestation of God's divine energies and opulence.
So on this World Oceans Day, let us be reminded that the ocean IS God Himself. Therefore let us treat the ocean and everything that lives in it, with respect.
